Fresh on the Job Market? Remember this Trifecta of Best Practices

by Justin Totty, Research Associate for Gateway Group Personnel

In our fast paced, ever evolving world, the days of searching for your next role in the ‘classifieds’ are long gone. As a job seeker, you must adapt and stand out from the rest. Learn this trifecta of best practices, and you’ll become a much more desirable candidate to potential employers.

1.     Keep that resume updated

If you are just entering the job market or find yourself looking to change your current situation, start the process by updating your resume. Surprisingly, many people begin applying for jobs with incomplete or poorly written resumes. Ask professional connections or a trusted recruiter to tailor or review it to avoid paying for a costly resume services. And don’t forget, you must update your resume for the specific job you want.

2.     LinkedIn, LinkedIn, LinkedIn

Once you have a well-written resume, you can use that information to update or create a LinkedIn profile. Be sure to include a professional profile picture and the bulk of your work history. Add ‘buzz words’ from your industry to help recruiters and hiring managers find you. Also, spend time “sharing” and “liking” articles or updates that pertain to your industry, but avoid things that could be deemed inappropriate. Consider adding professional networks or companies, such as school alumni networks, professional associations, and other industry specific groups to make your profile even more dynamic.

3.     Research

We frequently encounter candidates who failed to ‘do their homework’. Research your targeted industry on a local level. See what types of jobs are available and the average salaries. Talk openly with trusted professionals or recruiters in your field to get a good understanding of the market. Make sure to also research any company before you apply and especially before you interview. Furthermore, be sure to know your worth and the worth of companies in your area to ensure mutual expectations and to aid in future negotiations.

A lot has changed for job seekers in the last several years, but it is crucial to remember these three basics of job hunting: always have your resume reviewed by your professional references, colleagues, or recruiters; keep your online presence updated and professional; and continue to learn about the market and industry in your area. Using this trifecta can help you succeed in your next job search. Remember, the hiring process is a marathon, not a sprint.
